Urinary Tract Infections are a real pain in the butt (among other things). They affect a large percentage of women and some of us are more prone to them than others. While the symptoms are pretty obvious (burning pain when you wee and such), the methods of prevention might not be so clear. PELVI have put together some basic tips to help you keep a strong defense against UTI's in the future. Simple, yet effective!
1: DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
Have you ever noticed that when you're nicely hydrated, your urine isn't as yellow or as strong smelling? The more fluids you drink, the more your urine dilutes, which is essential for propper bladder functions and minimising the risk of bacteria build ups. The bacteria is what can cause infection.
2: EMPTY YOUR BLADDER AFTER INTERCOURSE
PELVI appreciates that there are a few things on your mind after intimate scenarios. You might not be able to run straight to the toilet, however urinating after sex can help you flush out any bacteria that might have made its way into the bladder while you've been busy.
3: AVOID USING FRAGRANCED OR POTENTIALLY IRRITATING PRODUCTS DOWN THERE
Deodorants, fragranced feminine wipes, certain powders, can all irritate your lady parts. Chemicals and certain oils might disagree with the area. This irritation and any reactions to the products can easily start UTI symptoms if you're already prone to the infections. Try using a pH balanced natural intimate wash, like PELVIwash which uses ingredients that will not irritate delicate parts of the body.
4: SPEAK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT YOUR BIRTH CONTROL METHODS
Diaphragms, certain condoms and lubricants can all contribute to bacterial growth and irritation within the vagina. UTI's don’t agree with this! If you're prone to UTI's or if you have any concerns about your birth control methods, see your doctor and have a chat about your bathroom (and bedroom) habits. This could be a great option if you've had all the infections you can handle.
5: BIKINIS AND GYM GEAR ARE NOT ALL-DAY OUTFITS
Sweaty gym gear and wet bikinis are items of clothing that should not be worn all day. It's not such a big deal if you've never had a UTI before but if you're prone to them and want to try your best to avoid them, dry, clean clothes are the way to go. The sweat and dampness of your gym gear and swimwear can breed bacteria pretty quickly, and if that migrates to the urethra then you're in a bit of trouble.
6: WHEN YOU GOTTA GO ... GO!
Don't hold it. Find a toilet. The longer your wee sits in the bladder the easier it is for the bacteria to multiply. Holding your pee for long periods of time, repeatedly, exposes the body to this bacteria, which basically causes the urine to turn stagnant, which is the start of your UTI.
